We are excited to announce the expansion of the TERN program to
the mid coast of Texas through three workshops and training events.
Friday, February 27th 2015 - Rookery Island Monitoring Training
This program will be held from 10am - 12pm at the home of our Coastal Warden, Tim Wilkinson (2455 W Maple St. Port O’Connor TX 75982). The training workshop will provide citizen science volunteers with the information required to collect valuable data on nesting birds throughout the nesting season. Interested participants need to consider that sites for the Rookery Monitoring are on islands or habitats which may be accessible only by motorized boat or kayak. This training workshop is limited to 10 people. CLICK HERE to register on-line.

Wednesday, April 15th 2015 there will be two
training sessions held back to back at the Aquarium at Rockport Harbor (706
Navigation Circle, Rockport, TX 78382) Through this training program volunteers will learn how to
identify local colonial water bird species, current scientific survey and data
collection protocols as well as information on how to assist researchers
conduct these surveys by boat and by land. These workshops will be divided into 2
habitat specific sessions.
Session 1: Rookery Island
Monitoring Training 9:00am to 11:00am – Training will include how
to collect valuable data on colonial waterbirds during nesting season on nests,
chick numbers and disturbances. Interested participants need to consider that
sites for Rookery Monitoring are on islands or habitats which may
be accessible only by motorized boat or kayak. Volunteers must stay off of
islands at a safe distance at all times when conducting rookery monitoring to
reduce disturbances to the birds.
Session 2: Foraging Monitoring Training 12:00pm to 2:00pm - This training will include identifying waterbirds, behaviors,
and how to conduct surveys in foraging habitats throughout the year.
Sites for foraging monitoring are generally accessible
by foot, some by kayak or boat as these habitats include wetlands, open water,
marsh, ponds, streams, and man-made drainage features.
