With so many upcoming TERN events and activities, we wanted to provide the latest information on volunteer opportunities...
Clean-Up and Restoration Days:
Bolivar Peninsula clean-up – Monday, November 16th 9am-2pm
In coordination with Keep Bolivar Beautiful, we will be completing a clean-up on Bolivar Peninsula. We will meet at the Bolivar Ferry Landing parking lot, and will be cleaning up the wetlands that are few hundred yards from the lot. This clean-up is open to participants of all ages!
**Please bring water, closed-toed shoes with non-slip soles, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and bug spray, work gloves, and a sack lunch. Additional water will be provided, along with snacks, gloves, grabbers, and trash bags.
GISP Clean-Up – Tuesday, November 17th 9am-2pm
Please meet at the GISP visitor center/headquarters. Bring water in a refillable bottle, marsh boots, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and bug spray, gloves, and a sack lunch. Additional water and snacks will be provided, along with gloves, grabbers, and trash bags.
NOTE: This was originally posted as a kayak only event. That has been changed and the clean-up will NOT be by kayaks.
As a follow-up to the Bird Nerd held last weekend by Charli Rohack and Joanie Steinhaus, Charli will be holding a Seabird Patrol Training for those interested in learning how to aid birds in distress. The training will be Saturday, November 21stat 10am in Galveston.
The Sea Bird Patrol has played a large role in locating sick and injured birds and getting them the medical care they need in a safe manner without risk to the volunteer or wildlife. Volunteering for Sea Bird Patrols would involve you signing up for a weekly commitment to adopt a site where sea birds have been showing up. As a volunteer, you will be able to report birds needing to be transported to a Wildlife Rehabilitator for care by reporting these birds to Galveston County Animal Control for capture and transportation which may require you to wait until Animal Control arrives. Depending on your personal comfort level, we can train you to net the birds and safely transport these birds to Charli or the Houston Wildlife Rehabilitator and supply you with the necessary items to accomplish this.
If you are interested in joining the Seabird Patrol team, please email us at TERN@audubon.org. We will confirm your registration, and will let you know where the training will be held.
Challenger 7 Memorial Park – Friday, November 20th at 9am**.
Please meet in the main parking lot. The address for this park is: 2301 W Nasa Blvd, Webster, TX 77598.
**Please note the time change for this event. This site has been monitored by David Bulliner and is a good place to find ducks, herons and egrets, and even kingfishers! Please join us for this great opportunity.
Sweetwater – Tuesday, December 1st at 9am.
GISP – Wednesday, December 9th at 9am.
As with all surveys, please bring water, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, long pants, closed-toed shoes, bug spray, binoculars, and your favorite bird book.
Group surveys are a great way to get involved and meet new TERN participants. New and experienced birders are always welcome, and no certifications or trainings are required to take part in these activities.
