Sowing seeds for the birds....

"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it is hitched to everything else in the universe" John Muir

Spring has sprung! Well on the Texas coast, did we really experience a winter? Regardless as our last "cold" front moves rain and wind through our area, I can't help but feel the earth becoming prepared for spring.  Many of my friends are picking out their wish list of plants they want for the garden, however many of the options are selected based on appearance alone! As flowers compete to outshine each other through the color and display of the blooms alone, not all plants are created equal and not all of the best choices are obvious to the eye.  National Audubon Society's initiative for Bird Friendly Communities is drawing more attention to promoting "bird thoughtful" landscape planning.

The March 5th Bird Nerd Series will feature our Urban Conservation Program Manager, Tania Homayoun. She will be sharing with us how she is implementing the Bird Friendly Communities program in the Dallas area and what we can do here along the coast! This event will be held at the Texas City Prairie Preserve from 9am to 11am and you can register by following the link.

In the meantime, enjoy this interesting article from the New York Times as they share our vision for a better bird friendly garden!
