May 2016 - Audubon TERN Events & Activities

Sweetwater Survey:
Tuesday – May 3, 2016
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Just a quick reminder about Tuesday’s upcoming group bird survey at GBF’s Sweetwater Property. We will meet at the property entrance on 103rd Street in Galveston at 9:00 AM and finish up around 12:00 PM. This is an ongoing activity held on the first Tuesday of the month. These surveys are an important tool for monitoring bird populations, migration, habitat and the overall health of Galveston Bay. If you’d like to come, be prepared with wading boots or rubber boots! The weather has been quite wet and many of the typical surveys are flooded from rain and high tides.

Bird Nerd Series:
Saturday - May 7, 2016
9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Texas City Prairie Preserve

Our next Bird Nerd Series features Dr. Thomas Hardy from the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment as he covers The Function and Application of Drones in Natural Resource Management. He will be talking about drone technology in science related fields, as in what are functional resource monitoring unmanned autonomous vehicles (drones) and the application of drones for monitoring nesting birds - applications and caveats.  He will also be doing a demonstration flight of one of this unmanned autonomous vehicles as long as the weather holds out. This lecture is 2 hours of Advanced Training for Master Naturalist.

Also Saturday May 7th 12:00PM – 2:00 PM we are having a TERN Training class for waterbird monitoring in foraging habitats at this same location (TCPP). If you’ve been interested in the many opportunities that the TERN program offers, this training class is the first step to getting involved, survey time counts as volunteer service hours for many groups, and the surveys can be done when and where you want.  This training class is also 2 hours of Advanced Training for Master Naturalist.
To register for the Bird Nerd Series or the TERN training, just email tern@audubon.org

GISP Survey:
Wednesday - May 11, 2016
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
We are also continuing our monthly group surveys at Galveston Island State Park – held on the second Wednesday of the month.
We will return to the three spots we have been surveying: the beach, the “VIP” freshwater ponds/coastal prairie and everyone’s favorite, the birding tower. Meet at the Beach-Side Park Headquarters at 9:00 AM and we typically wrap up around noon.

New to a TERN Group Survey???
We suggest you come prepared with the following:
·         Water bottle (full)
·         Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
·         Long pants (for walking through tall grass)
·         Close-toed shoes or hiking boots
·         Bug spray
·         Binoculars
·         Your favorite bird book or reference material

We always have extra bird guides, datasheets, as well as water and snacks for the group. Hopefully it will be a nice day but watch the weather and dress accordingly.
Be sure to check out the TERN website (http://AudubonTERN.org) for the latest info on weather conditions or cancelations.
We are always looking for new TERN participants. Please pass the word along to others that might be interested. Group survey activities are a great way to get involved. New and experienced birders are always welcomed!
