We sent out a call for volunteers to
assist a local Galvestonion who is collecting these pelicans and transporting
them to the Wildlife Center of Texas in Houston. Charli R could really use
large boxes, old towels or blankets to transport these birds safely. Our Texas
City office will be accepting these items and delivering them to the island. If
you want to help, email tern@Audubon.org
UPDATE 1 - The Wildlife Center of Texas
is now treating 38 brown pelicans with at least 5 more still on the way. In
addition to embedded hooks and fishing line, many of our patients are
very weak and dehydrated from being unable to eat for extended periods of time.
This vital nebulizing unit is being utilized non-stop right now, thanks to all
the funds our supporters raised. Winter is typically our slow season, but with
this influx of critical patients requiring round-the-clock care, we need your
help. Please Donate Electronically or visit
our Amazon Wish List.
Your direct donations are TRULY saving lives! Please share our story with
friends and family to help educate. Also tune in to channels 11 and 13 tonight

UPDATE 2 - In the last five days, The Wildlife Center of Texas has
received 87 critically injured brown pelicans from Galveston. These
state-endangered birds have been impaled by fishing hooks and lures both
internally and externally. Many have fishing line with weights tightly wrapped
around their bodies, beaks, and legs. They are emaciated and suffering from
infections, open wounds, and parasites. All external hooks have been removed
and their corresponding injuries treated. However, radiographs reveal many have
hooks, line, and sinkers deep in their gastrointestinal tracts that will
require surgery. The Wildlife Center of Texas is Houston’s ONLY wildlife trauma
and rehabilitation center that accepts all injured, sick, or orphaned native
wildlife species. Already this year, we have admitted 9,200 animals, comprising
over 200 species. Your gift today, will not only help us give these birds the
expensive veterinary care they need to recover and be released back into the
wild, but it also supports the growing number of patients coming to our
wildlife hospital this winter. We hope you’ll consider making a year-end tax
deductible donation, right now to The Wildlife Center of Texas. Protecting
Texas's wildlife is vital to protecting the wild heritage of the greater Gulf
Coast. CLICK HERE to donate NOW.
