October Group Surveys...

This month we have 3 fantastic opportunities to take part in Audubon TERN’s citizen science monitoring program. These group surveys are a great way to check out new birding locations while getting hands-on experiences with data sheets, surveying techniques, bird identification and much more. New and experienced birders are always welcomed and no certifications or training are required to take part in these activities.

We always have extra binoculars and bird guides, as well as water and snacks for the group. Hopefully it will be a nice day but watch the weather and dress accordingly.

We ask that all participants sign up using our on-line registration system. We use this info to email registered participants in case of bad weather or with other late-breaking announcements. You can also checkout the website (http://AudubonTERN.org) for the latest info.

Sweetwater Group Survey: Tuesday - October 6th  9:00 am - 12:00 pm
This is part of an ongoing survey project in cooperation with the Galveston Bay Foundation. We meet at the property entrance on 103rd Street in Galveston at 9:00 am and finish up around 12:00 pm.

This site has had a lot of rain lately so please come prepared. Rubber boots are highly recommended.

GISP Group Survey: Wednesday - October 14th  9:00 am - 12:00 pm
This is part of an ongoing survey project in cooperation with the TPWD – Galveston Island State Park. Meet at the Beach-Side Park Headquarters at 9:00 am and we will wrap up around noon.

We will return to the three spots we have been surveying: the beach, “VIP” freshwater ponds/coastal prairie and everyone’s favorite, the birding tower. We will also visit GISP's newly constructed observation platform (time permitting).

Hosted Survey: Thursday - October 22nd  9:00 am - 12:00 pm
October’s “Hosted” survey will be at the Texas City Dike, with Cindy Leining. Our TERN Volunteer “Hosts” have been surveying their sites for an extended period of time and will lead the group activity.

This from Cindy…
My monitoring site is the 2nd area that has a boat ramp on the left side of the dike.  I drive a dark blue 4-wheel drive truck and my cell number is (409) 739-3081.  After we complete the group survey at my normal location I thought we would drive further down the dike to the end of the beach area. It’s toward the end of the dike before a large boat ramp.  There is usually a large colony of gulls, terns, skimmers, etc. in that area along with a variety of peeps.

Hope to see you there!
